The southbound tube of Blackwall Tunnel will close for five weekends starting tomorrow, 13 January, so Riverlinx CJV can conduct drainage and gantry installation works for Silvertown Tunnel.
Riverlinx CJV is made up of Bam, Ferrovial Construction and SK Ecoplant and is contracted to build the 1.4km Silvertown road tunnel to link Silvertown in Newham to the north of the River Thames with the Greenwich Peninsula. It is due to open next year.
The works will be conducted on the northbound approach to Blackwall Tunnel with Transport for London (TfL) redirecting traffic heading north across the River Thames through the southbound tunnel.
TfL is warning southbound traffic will need to seek alternative routes across the weekends of 13-15 January, 20-22 January, 27-29 January, 10-12 February and 24-26 February while the installation works are completed.
The works, which are required to implement the road configuration for the new Silvertown Tunnel, will see new drainage as well as new over-height vehicle gantries installed, which are necessary to protect the tunnel.
Work on delivering the new Silvertown Tunnel has seen much progress in the last year. Both of the 1.1km tunnels have now been fully bored and the cut and cover sections are now in advanced stages of being covered. Works to fit out the tunnel are also well underway and cross passages are being constructed through waterlogged ground with the aid of ground freezing.
Throughout 2024, work will continue to install the safety critical systems within the tunnel, as well as complete work on the tunnel portals. Work is also progressing on the new road layout around Tidal Basin Roundabout in Newham, including new walking and cycling paths to make it easier for people accessing the Royal Docks via the Lower Lea Crossing.
A further weekend closure of the southbound Blackwall tunnel will also be required in March. TfL will confirm the dates for this in due course.
TfL director of network management and resilience Carl Eddleston said: “The Blackwall Tunnel is used by tens of thousands of vehicles every day and we appreciate that these planned weekend works will have an impact on some drivers.
“With less than 18 months until the new Silvertown Tunnel opens, we are working with Riverlinx CJV to prepare the northbound carriageway, and have worked hard to try and limit the potential disruption these will cause, such as ensuring a northbound route can be maintained throughout these closures.”
